Racism causes severe negative effects on mental and physical health, social well-being, and socioeconomic status. Psychologically, it triggers chronic stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and racial trauma, which can erode self-worth and lead to suicidal ideation. Physically, the chronic stress of discrimination elevates blood pressure, increases inflammation, and raises the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and premature death.

Socially and economically, racism impedes participation in society, leading to reduced educational achievement, higher unemployment, and housing insecurity. It fosters community isolation, distrust, and violence, while systemic barriers limit access to quality healthcare and fair employment. These disparities accumulate over a lifetime, a phenomenon known as “weathering,” which results in significant health inequities and reduced life expectancy for targeted groups.

  • Mental Health: Depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, and internalized racism.

  • Physical Health: Hypertension, heart disease, chronic inflammation, sleep disturbances, and weakened immune response.

  • Socioeconomic Impact: Lower income, higher poverty rates, educational gaps, and reduced access to medical care.

  • Community Effects: Social fragmentation, intergenerational trauma, and increased rates of suicide and violence.
